The Practice

Review

The Practice is Seth Godin's argument against waiting for the right moment to create. Creativity, he says, isn't a mood or a gift you receive; it's a practice you commit to on a schedule, and the inspiration tends to follow the work rather than precede it. That idea sounds obvious. The book makes it stick anyway, mostly by coming at it from enough angles that the message lands. I read this when I was stuck on something I kept deferring, and it was exactly the right intervention. The one thing I want to do after every re-read: find a way to send myself these notes in six months, when the resistance comes back.
